Six Rooms Facing a Volcano That Is Still Active

Ometepe is two volcanoes joined by an isthmus in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, and Moyogalpa is the town where the ferry from San Jorge puts you ashore, under the near perfect cone of Concepción. Most of the island’s beds are lodges and hospedajes. This one is a four star boutique with six rooms, three hundred metres south of the airstrip and a few steps from the centre of town, built around a pool and a garden terrace that both face the mountain. Rooms run from thirty to forty-two square metres, which on this island is unusual, and every one of them is air conditioned.

Why It Works

Ometepe rewards a stay rather than a crossing, and staying requires somewhere you actually want to return to at six in the evening. Six rooms, a pool, a bar and a restaurant is the right size for that: small enough to stay quiet, equipped enough that you are not hunting for dinner after a day on a volcano. The second reason is the view, which is why people come to the island at all and which the terrace here is arranged around. The third is the practical layer: cars and bikes rented on site, walking tours booked at the desk, free parking behind the gate.

Why This Location

Moyogalpa is the island’s arrival point and its supply town, and the hotel sits about eighty metres from the centre of it, close enough that the shops, the pharmacy and the bus stop are a short walk. The airstrip is three hundred metres south. The ferry port is roughly forty minutes on foot or ten by taxi, worth knowing when you land with luggage. From here the island unfolds east: the freshwater springs at Ojo de Agua, the beach and lagoon at Charco Verde, the petroglyphs on the Maderas side, and the San Ramón waterfall for anyone who wants the long walk.

The Rooms, and the Terrace Question

Five configurations across six rooms, and the variable worth caring about is outdoor space. The twins and the double at thirty square metres come with or without a terrace; take the terrace. Above them sit two rooms of forty-two square metres, one a deluxe double with a balcony, the other a king suite. All of them sleep three or four, which makes this one of the easier addresses on the island to book for a group without splitting across two properties.

Evenings: The Pool, the Bar and the Billiard Table

The island empties early and the roads are dark, so where you sleep is also where your evening happens. The pool stays open into the warm part of the dusk, the bar handles the rest, and the games room with its billiards and darts covers the hours after dinner, which sounds like a detail until the second night. The restaurant works on a short menu, cooked to order rather than held on a buffet.

Getting to Ometepe, and Getting Around It

The ferry crosses from San Jorge, near Rivas, and lands at Moyogalpa; if you fly to the airstrip instead, the hotel arranges the shuttle for a fee. Once here, a vehicle changes the island completely, and cars and bikes are rented on site. Check in opens at eleven in the morning, unusually early and useful after a dawn crossing. Spanish is the working language at the desk, and dogs are welcome.
