A Four Star Hotel Where the Map Stops Offering Them

Somoto sits at the top of Nicaragua, capital of Madriz and the last town of any size before Honduras, which for years made it a place you passed through at speed. L’ver changed that arithmetic by opening as the first four star hotel in the northern region: twenty-four rooms, a restaurant with a name and a kitchen brigade, meeting rooms wired for a working week. It stands three and a half blocks south of the health centre, on a residential street rather than the highway. The town deserves a morning. The reason to book a night is what the highway passes just outside it.

Why It Works

We kept it for three reasons. It solves a real problem: the Somoto Canyon is among the more spectacular things to do in Nicaragua, and until this hotel opened the region had no four star bed to come back to. The Gran Suite is genuinely large, fifty-four square metres with a king bed and a hydromassage tub, a category you will not find elsewhere in Madriz. And the restaurant is not an afterthought: El Farolito cooks Nicaraguan dishes and contemporary plates with trained chefs, which changes what an evening here looks like.

Why This Location

The address is Sector 7, three and a half blocks south of the health centre, which puts you in residential Somoto rather than on the Panamericana. Walk into the centre for the bakeries that turn out rosquillas, the corn and cheese rings the town is known for, with the ovens open to look at. The canyon is reached by a marked detour off the highway just outside town, and its narrow section runs a little over two kilometres, walked, swum and floated rather than driven. The Honduran border lies further along the same road, which makes this a natural last night in Nicaragua, or a first one.

  • Amenities: Event and meeting rooms with full technical equipment, family rooms, in room hydromassage in the suite

The Gran Suite and the Two Rooms Under It

The range is short and legible. The Royal Room is the standard double, built for two and nothing more complicated. The Family Room adds a bed for children, which is the one to ask for if you are driving the north with kids in the back. Above them sits the Gran Suite: fifty-four square metres, king bed, hydromassage tub, and enough floor to unpack properly rather than live out of the car. One night before the canyon, take the Royal. If the canyon is the whole reason for the trip, take the suite and come back to it.

El Farolito, and What the Town Bakes

The hotel restaurant carries a name and a kitchen: Nicaraguan cooking alongside contemporary dishes, prepared by trained chefs. Eat there in the evening. Keep the morning for the town’s other speciality. Somoto’s rosquillas, baked from corn flour into small crunchy rings, are sold across the region and made here, and several bakeries let you watch a batch go in. Locals take them with Nicaraguan coffee, and they travel well enough to justify buying more than you intended.

Before You Book

Canyon trips run guided, with life vests and ropes provided, so plan an early start and a second night if you want the full route rather than the viewpoint. Check in opens at two and check out runs to midday. Families are welcome, animals are not. Spanish and English are both spoken at the desk. And if you are crossing into Honduras the next morning, this is the last comfortable bed on the Nicaraguan side.
