Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow
No Cars, No Roads, and a Restaurant Worth the Crossing
Little Corn lies off Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast, and you reach it by flying to Big Corn Island and taking a panga across the channel. There are no cars on it and no roads, only paths, unlit and muddy after rain, which tells you most of what the island is like. Beach and Bungalow occupies a stretch of Cocal Beach on the windward side with eleven cabins spread between the sand and the garden behind it, plus the best known restaurant on the island. The cabins are wooden, screened and netted, each with its own veranda, and most open straight onto the beach.
Why It Works
The Caribbean side of Nicaragua is a different country from the Pacific one, and this is the most comfortable way we found to sleep in it. The cabins are properly built rather than improvised: en suite bathrooms with hot showers, king beds, serious mosquito nets, verandas that run to a hundred and sixty square feet on the garden units. Then there is the Turned Turtle, the restaurant on site, which means no dark path between you and dinner. And the small provisions do the rest, purified water and snacks in the cabin, beach towels, night security, wine in the master suites, which on an island with no shops separates a stay from a camp.
Why This Location
Cocal Beach faces the wind, which gives it the breeze and the long empty sand, and the village and the dock are a walk across the island on the path. What you get here that the rest of Nicaragua cannot offer is reef. Captain Peter runs snorkel trips of two or three hours straight off the hotel beach, and the dive operators on the island work the same water. Bring your own mask if you are particular about fit, because there is nowhere on Little Corn to rent one.

Gulliver, Crusoe and the Garden Cabin
Three names cover eleven cabins. Gulliver is the largest, close to three hundred square feet with a king bed and a loft holding a double: four of the six sit on the beach, the other two in the garden a forty-five second walk behind it, with a veranda twice the size. Crusoe is the compact version at around two hundred and twenty-five square feet, beachfront, king bed, same bathroom standard. The Standard Crusoe swaps the king for a queen and a double, which suits three. The garden bungalow is the family option, four hundred and thirty square feet, two bedrooms, fully screened deck, thirty seconds from the sand.
The Turned Turtle, and Eating on Island Time
The restaurant is why a good number of guests book here rather than elsewhere on the island, and it runs on island logic: dinner orders close at five in the afternoon, so you choose what you are eating before the light goes. Plan around that rather than against it and the evening becomes the best part of the day.
Power, Water and the Panga: How the Island Works
Village power runs roughly from one in the afternoon to six in the morning, and the master suites carry rechargeable backup so the fans keep turning afterwards. Water is harvested from the roofs, so the tap is for washing and the drinking water comes purified and free in the cabin. The WiFi, improbably, is on all day. The panga leaves Big Corn in the late afternoon, usually around half past four, with a morning boat timed to the flights; tell the hotel your arrival a day ahead and someone meets the dock. Bring a torch for the paths.
