Surf Ranch Resort - Popoyo
We chose this address because Popoyo rewards proximity: the walk from the gate to the...
Comarca El Limon 2, in the municipality of Tola, is not an address anyone finds by accident, and that is part of the appeal. Malibu Popoyo stands directly on Playa Popoyo, low and white and single-storey, with the pool and its sun terrace between the rooms and the beach. The building is small enough that the pool bar doubles as the meeting point and the restaurant knows the table count before service. It is a beach hotel built for a handful of guests at a time, on one of the most-surfed stretches of the Nicaraguan Pacific.
Two things settled it. The first is the size of the rooms, which on this coast is where the difference between comfortable and cramped actually lives: thirty-four square metres at the smallest, forty-six at the largest, each with its own terrace. The second is the spa, a full facility with massages, facials, body scrubs and yoga classes, which turns the day after a heavy session into something other than waiting. Add private beach access, a year-round pool and an airstrip ten minutes away, and the case makes itself.
Playa Popoyo is the anchor of the Emerald Coast, and the waves come in a cluster rather than singly: Playgrounds, Panga Drops and Lance's Left are the names that travel furthest, with Playa Guasacate and the Astillero rivermouth further up the sand. Five kilometres puts you at Las Salinas, thirty-two at San Juan del Sur, and ten minutes at Costa Esmeralda airport, which is the practical reason this part of Rivas now works for a week rather than a road trip. Inland the country turns to dry forest, with the Chacocente reserve and its nesting turtles down the coast.

The room list is unusually easy to compare because the hotel publishes the floor areas. The Master Suite runs to forty-six square metres with a king bed; the Loft, at forty-four, adds a queen and is the one that works for a family of four; the Family Loft and the Pool View Suite both sit at forty; the Garden View Suite, at thirty-four, is the entry point. All are air conditioned, all have private bathrooms with walk-in showers, and all open onto a terrace facing the garden or the pool.
Surf trips are built around two windows and a long gap in the middle, and this is a hotel that has thought about the gap. The spa covers back, foot, head, hand and full-body massage, facials, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures, and runs yoga classes. Bikes and horses are arranged on site, as is fishing, and the tour desk handles the days when the swell is not worth the paddle. Golf is close enough to be a morning rather than an expedition.
Check-in is from two in the afternoon until nine at night, check-out between seven and eleven, which is worth matching to the flight into Costa Esmeralda. Pets are not accepted and step free access is not part of the building. Staff work in Spanish, English and German. And because the hotel is small, the categories sell in a particular order: if the trip is four people, ask for the Loft first.
