Malibu Popoyo
What won us over here is the scale of the rooms: five categories in a...
The Emerald Coast is the stretch of Rivas shoreline where the Nicaraguan surf map gets crowded, and Surf Ranch has taken twenty-five acres of it at Guasacate. The address reads as directions rather than a street: the Guasacate entrance, then three and a half kilometres west, at Las Salinas. What you arrive at is not a boutique house but a small settlement. Three storeys of ocean view apartments face the water, a scatter of stand-alone houses sits behind them, dining happens on the sand, and the beach access is private. The property calls itself a luxury surf resort, and on this coast the description holds.
The decision came down to what twenty-five acres buy. Space first: a group can take a four-bedroom house with its own pool, more than four thousand square feet of it, without splitting across addresses. Access second: private beach access and a short walk to the water mean the dawn patrol does not begin with a drive. Breadth third: the same booking works for the family that will spend the week between the pool and the sand, and for the two people in it who want Lance's Left at first light. Holding both at once is rare here.
Popoyo is a name people use for a whole cluster of waves, and the cluster is the reason to be here. Within reach of a single morning: Playgrounds, Lance's Left, Astillero Rivermouth, Teonoste, Popoyo itself, Santana, Rosada, Panga Drops, Colorado and Manzanillo. The sand changes character as you move along it, Playa Guasacate in front of the resort, Playa Gavilan and Playa Astillero to either side. Inland the ground turns to dry forest: the Chacocente reserve, where sea turtles nest, lies down the coast, and there are natural hot springs and horseback riding closer in. Two golf courses, Iguana and Guacalito, are a short drive away, and Costa Esmeralda is the nearest airstrip, which is what makes a week here work without the long road from Managua.
Price: Premium to Luxury
Vibe: Low-rise, sun-bleached, early mornings, family surf camp
Rooms: Eighteen ocean view apartments over three floors, plus five houses of three or four bedrooms with private pools
Best For: Surfing families, groups booking a whole house, and travellers who want the Popoyo breaks without a daily drive
Our Favorite Thing About the Resort: The four-bedroom houses, which give a group its own pool and its own hours while keeping the beach a walk away
Dining: Beachfront dining on site
Amenities: Private beach access, private pools in the houses, air conditioning and hot water throughout, balconies on every unit, billiards, free private parking, golf within three kilometres
Attractions: Playgrounds, Lance's Left and Panga Drops; Playa Guasacate, Playa Gavilan and Playa Astillero; Chacocente turtle reserve; natural hot springs; Iguana and Guacalito golf courses
The two formats answer two different trips. The apartments run six to a floor across three storeys, fully furnished, with hot water, air conditioning and a balcony facing the ocean on every one; they are the straightforward choice for a couple or a small family. The houses are the other proposition, three or four bedrooms and a private outdoor pool on more than four thousand square feet, which is what makes a group booking here feel like a rental rather than a hotel stay. Long-term stays are possible, and a fair number of guests take them.
The week does not have to be all water. Tide pools open up along the rocks at low tide, the Chacocente reserve protects one of the Pacific coast's turtle nesting beaches, and there are natural hot springs inland. Iguana and Guacalito both put a golf course within a short drive, horseback riding is arranged locally, and beginners can take a lesson on the gentler sand-bottom days rather than sitting out the flat spell.
Check-in runs from three in the afternoon to nine in the evening and check-out from seven to noon, which matters when the arrival involves a transfer. Pets are not accepted and step free access is not part of the buildings, so both need asking about in advance. Costa Esmeralda is the closest airstrip; if the arrival is through Managua instead, arrange the road transfer at the same time as the room, because Las Salinas is not a place to improvise a car at night.
